With the lift of travel restrictions and the recovery of Cambodia’s economy and people gaining confidence to travel again, 1.8 million visited Siem Reap in 10 months of 2022.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, Siem Reap has welcomed 1.8 million travelers including locals and international tourists so far and is expected to reach 2 million by the end of 2022. However, when compared to pre-pandemic levels, this figure remains relatively low.
Tourism has long been the heart and soul of Siem Reap. Thus, the return of tourists will revitalize and improve people’s lives. The hospitality and Food and Beverage industries were severely hit by the pandemic. It’s reported that about 100 business ceased their operations.
The returns of travelers will also impact other sectors, particularly real estate. When tourist returns, the demand for commercial and residential real estate is also on the rise. Siem Reap has a total of 230 hotels yet, only about 20 hotels have resumed their operation.
There were reportedly said that from January until October of 2022, 1.8M tourists visited Siem Reap, of which 1.6 million are locals– and 170,000 are international travelers. This figure shows a 900% increase compared to the same period in 2021. As the economy gradually recovers, people’s lifestyle also improves, allowing them to travel more.
According to the Ministry of Tourism. Siem Reap’s airport currently welcomed around 15 international flights bringing between 1,300 to 1,400 passengers whereas road travel brought over 600 travelers daily.
